SAVE OLD SOULS SENIOR K9 RESCUE CLOSE
THEIR DOORS AFTER 17 YEARS
September 13, 2017
For many in Medicine Hat, surrounding area and beyond, Save Old Souls Senior K-9 Rescue is a well-known name; a rescue where you just might find your next older dog that is a perfect fit for your home and lifestyle. And rightly so, since SOS has been doing just that since 2001. And so, it is a sad day to announce that Save Old Souls is closing its rescue effective immediately.
The issue lies in the shortage of volunteers willing to commit to the many hours per week needed for some positions. With four Board members, all finishing their terms this fall, it leaves a huge vacancy as they take 30 years of combined experience with them. The decision to close was not easy, however the Board of Directors unanimously agreed that this was the most feasible option. Save Old Souls will no longer be accepting any new dogs, and those remaining in our care will continue to be SOS dogs until their adoption.
By closing its doors, SOS celebrates seventeen years of successful placements while generating untold thousands of loyal and considerate friends and supporters along the way. It is so gratifying to know that people trusted SOS with finding their pet a new, loving home, and that others had the ability to see the love and devotion that a senior dog had to bring to their lives.
A very special thank you to the many foster homes that stepped up to the plate and gave love and guidance to dogs whose lives had just changed drastically. SOS is also thankful to each and every one of the volunteers who have donated an hour here and there – or days on end – to care and nurture for these deserving dogs. All past and present Board members exhibited great compassion and took enormous pride in caring for our dogs. Even though they worked tirelessly, in the end there was an overwhelming amount of work to be done and simply not enough volunteers available to share the load.
Save Old Souls started life as a pet rescue, taking in cats, dogs and other animals that required shelter and some TLC. It was SOS who began SE Alberta’s first pet food bank, serving those who were hard pressed to afford food to feed their pets. The organization evolved into the charity that has become a near and dear mission of the Board of Directors who have helped animals unable to help themselves; by managing dog intake and adoptions, coordinating with foster families, delivering dogs to vet appointments all while undertaking board positions and personal responsibilities.
Over the past seventeen years, SOS has been committed to finding loving forever homes for every SOS dog. Those who wish to continue to make a difference are encouraged to volunteer or provide support to one or more of the animal rescues in the Medicine Hat area, such as the SPCA or Persian Dreams and Canine Themes. Whatever you can give, your time or your donations, will be greatly appreciated.
